Historic Church-State Separation Simulcast Huge Success

Posted by Beth on March 29, 2008

On March 26, in movie theaters in 37 cities nationwide, interested citizens gathered to learn about the threats to church-state separation and to demand that candidates for elected office answer questions about key issues dealing with individual freedom.

Peter Coyote, celebrated Hollywood actor and filmmaker, emceed the program, which included such special guests as The Bacon Brothers (featuring actor Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael), actors Michael J. Fox; Jack Klugman; Wendie Malick; Dan Lauria; and Catherine Dent, comedian and Air America host Marc Maron; singer/songwriter Catie Curtis and satirist Roy Zimmerman.

The event also featured Americans who have fought for individual freedoms against great odds. Bryan and Christy Rehm (who fought creationism in Dover, Pa. science classes), Matthew LaClair (a New Jersey high schooler who exposed religious indoctrination at his school), Roberta Stewart (an Afghanistan War widow who fought for equal rights for Wiccan veterans), Dr. Susan Wicklund (who wears a bullet-proof vest to provide reproductive services in underserved areas), the Rev. Madison Shockley (pastor and reproductive rights advocate), David and Ryan Altoon (who oppose fundamentalist proselytism at U.S. military academies), Melinda “Lindy” Maddox (who successfully sued Alabama “Commandments” Judge Roy Moore), and Susan Jacoby (author of The Age of American Unreason).

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, Americans United executive director, and the Rev. Welton Gaddy, president of The Interfaith Alliance Foundation, also participated in the simulcast.

Check back because the entire two hour show will soon be available online. Don't miss your chance to find out “Everything you Always Wanted to Know About Church and State … but were afraid to ask!”

"Compassion Forum" is unconstitutional

Last night CNN had a "Conpassion Forum" with Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama where interviewers asked personal questions of each candidate about their religous beleifs. The first ammendment states "There shall be no religious test for public office". Who owns CNN? I want to be informed about the candidates so I watch every presidential debate. I stopped watching this after about 10 minutes and found the whole idea of making judgements on them for their religious beliefs unamerican.
